How an Insurance Agent, Broker or Navigator Can Help You Sign Up for Obamacare

Here is more helpful stuff on agents, brokers and navigators!  They can make the process easier by

  • determining whether you qualify for subsidies
  • helping you compare plan prices and coverage details, while explaining any complicated features or terms
  • recommending plans that would be best for you (government assisters, on the other hand, are not permitted to suggest specific plans), and
  • walking you through the application process

Testimonials from Suffolk county: It is not all bad!

I signed up through the NY state website.  It was the easiest thing I’ve ever done in this realm. Particularly, as an independent contractor — In the past, I’d tried several times to navigate their labyrinthian website — finally giving up as I was asked to produce more and more paperwork.  In this new incarnation, as a self employed person — I went to the Individuals section, and then it asked me to fill in what my expected income was, my deductions and it did the calculations for me.  The site immediately told me what I was eligible for and then asked me to choose a plan — I was able to see which plan my doctor accepted (by going to my doctor’s site)….you also have the option to change the plan within 90 days or if not within that time frame then after a year you can opt for another plan.  It was so easy and stress free I couldn’t believe it.  I am so pleased, I am encouraging others to follow suit.  Caterina.

I signed up by PHONE and it was easy and painless, though I think the “hold time” to talk to someone may have increased. I got what I believe is a good plan at an amazingly good rate as my income is low enough to qualify for the subsidy. It took about a half hour. They are available 24/7. Marketplace 800 318-2596.  Robin.

I did finally get a BC/BS policy for a few dollars more than my old lousy Oxford policy. This one now has no deductible and covers a lot more services.  An agent (paid by the state) helped me sort through it, since finding participating providers is the huge time consuming part.  I have a confirmation number for the new policy but I have not yet been contacted by BC/BS to pay, so…come January 1st I do not think any doctors will see me without insurance verification or policy number… I will call them on Monday and see what needs to be done.  By the way, the agent I used was Steven Schiller, Financial Representative, Group Sales
Tel 516-677-5031 • Fax 516-677-6894 Woodbury , New York 11797.
sschiller@glic.com. He gets one set up and confirmed but then payments and activation is between the insurance company and the insured.  Jim

Mental Health and the ACA

Those of us with experience, either as patients or health care providers, in the field of mental health may wonder what the ACA provides towards better mental health.  Truly, sometimes I wonder at the sorry state of this branch of medicine when it comes to keeping patients and the public safe.  The NY Times had a sobering piece on how poorly we enforce our laws and regulations to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill.

However, the ACA does help the mental health field (at least a bit)!  Read more here and get answers to questions like these:

  1. How is mental health care insurance provided to those in need?
  2. With implementation of the health reform law, what options will be available to me for new, additional or expanded mental health care insurance?
  3. I am a Veteran. What do I need to know about insurance for mental health care that will help me and my family?
  4. I am a Hispanic American. What do I need to know about insurance for mental health care under the health reform law? Who will have access to insurance and who will not?
  5. Does everyone need to have health insurance under the health reform law?
  6. What is available now through the health reform law what do I need to know before 2014?
  7. What health insurance benefits will be mandatory as part of the health reform law?
  8. I have heard a lot about the issue of Medicaid expansion. What does this mean to me in my state?

Here, also, is an interesting view with a detailed discussion of state by state differences of the impact of ACA on mental health care!  Some states have watered down the benefits considerably it seems.

Finally, this .gov site sums it up!

  • The ACA expands benefits and parity with other diseases
  • Covers preventative services
  • Cannot deny coverage for preexisting mental conditions

ACA and the Middle Class

So will the ACA really frustrate the middle class?  A nice analysis of what you get for your money and a retort to a misleading NYTimes article is this piece: “The ACA Will Help, Not ‘Frustrate’ the Middle Class” by Jared Bernstein.

Time to Review the ACA

The ACA (Obamacare) is getting a bad rap these days because of the flawed roll out of the website and the fact that a small percentage of current policy holders have had their insurances cancelled supposedly because they don’t measure up to the standards now required under the ACA.   There is a lot happening right now.  Tomorrow is a deadline for signing up if you want coverage to start on Jan 1st 2014.

Here is a review of what we have so far:

1) Young adults can stay on their parents’ insurance until age 29 (in NYS) whereas it was 22 before the ACA
2) Seniors who have Part D Medicare coverage (prescription drug plan) pay less for co-pays and deductibles since ACA was passed. (Closing the donut hole.)
3) Insurance companies are now required to direct 80% of their premium revenue to medical care. Before, some companies spent as little as 60% with 40% directed to salaries, advertisement and other admin costs.)

There is more and I promise to post regularly.  Most of all I want to help those of us who are struggling to sign up for what ever reason.

David

What exactly is Obamacare?

I found this interesting blog if you are asking the question “what exactly is Obamacare?”  It’s a pretty comprehensive, but readable, list.

And there is this one too!

Have you got a rebate check from your insurance?

Rebates are coming:  any insurance company with a medical/loss ratio of greater than 20/80 (that is they are paying more than 20% of your insurance premiums for admin costs rather than for your care) will have to send out rebates to you:  1.1 Billion going to nearly 13 Mio policy holders are expected. Check the medical/loss ratio of your insurance company here.

She got one of those rebate checks!
